Art Therapy for Traumatized Children (English/Ukrainian)

Art therapy provides a window into the inner world of children. Art therapy with traumatized children offers healing, transformation, restoration, and spiritual well-being. The creation of a work of art can bring stress reduction, release of painful emotions, and alleviation of sorrow for children. It is a powerful form of communication for children who may not yet possess the verbal skills to wrap language around their struggles. God places a high premium on the care of children and especially on the care and healing of wounded children.

Psalm 127: 3 “Children are a gift from the Lord; they are a reward from him.”

Psalm 82:3-4 “Give justice to the weak and the fatherless; maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute. Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.”

The activities that have been included in this art therapy project were chosen because they can offer comfort and healing for children. Perhaps most art activities bring some value; however, therapeutic value is greatly enhanced when the child is creating art alongside a warm, compassionate adult who can offer presence, empathy, attention, listening, and verbal reflection to the child’s art activity. It is hoped that the developmental processes and psychological well-being of many children can be restored through these art activities and by those who assist children in their art productions.
